Naples, late 18th century, « Bust of Neapolitan santon », terracotta, H. 20cm
This expressive santon bust is part of the tradition of Neapolitan nativity scenes, which began in the 13th century and really took off in the 18th century. Santons of all sizes and draped in the most precious fabrics embody the holy family surrounded by the Neapolitan people. A pious scene is combined with moments of daily life. Within these cribs, the santons represent all the layers of society: the misery of the little people, and the splendor of the nobles. Magi and bakers, saints and animals are mixed together. Some craftsmen (sculptors, seamstresses, silversmiths, carpenters) made a specialty of these nativity scenes which are still very successful today.
